Quick Info
If you’re craving a Western that feels both modern and old-school, “Godless” might be exactly your speed. It’s a limited series on Netflix from 2017, and the premise is basically a showdown: a notorious outlaw and his gang come looking for a traitor in a mining town populated almost entirely by women. The story takes its time, but there’s a terrific tension throughout, and seeing strong female characters driving the action is genuinely refreshing for the genre.
What really stood out to me were the visuals and the performances—especially Merritt Wever and Michelle Dockery. The dusty landscapes are gorgeous, and each main character feels like they’ve lived a whole life before you even meet them. The action scenes are tense and satisfyingly gritty, but the show doesn’t shy away from emotionally weighty moments either.
Sometimes the pacing drags, and a couple of sideplots could’ve been trimmed to keep things tighter. Plus, if you’re looking for something breezy, this is a slow burn that really wants you to settle in. Still, if you like Westerns with a modern twist, nuanced characters, and a cinematic feel, “Godless” is absolutely worth a watch.
