Quick Info

"The Rescue" is a documentary about the incredible 2018 cave rescue of a Thai boys’ soccer team. If you think you know the story from the news headlines, this film digs way deeper, focusing on the actual divers and the behind-the-scenes logistics (and panic!) that went into pulling off what felt impossible. It’s both tense and surprisingly moving, especially as you meet these very unglamorous, hobbyist cave divers who end up at the center of a global drama.

What really stood out to me were the candid interviews. The divers are everyday people with regular jobs, but their obsession with dark, flooded caves weirdly prepared them to save lives. Instead of macho heroics, you get a sense of anxious teamwork and the odd quirks that make them so well-suited (and, honestly, endearing). There’s a lot of humility—nobody brags, which kind of makes you root for them even harder.

Not everything lands perfectly. Some of the dramatized reenactments (which they had to use because there’s so little actual footage) can be a little jarring—at times it pulls you out of the raw tension. But Jonna and Vasarhelyi (the directors) keep the focus tight on those human stakes, so you stay engaged. The timeline can jump around just a bit, but it all ties back together by the end.

Visually, they use a mix of interviews, news footage, and the aforementioned reenactments, and while the constant cutting could feel chaotic, it actually mirrors the frantic reality in the cave and at the command center. There are some haunting shots of the flooded caves—claustrophobia warning if you’re sensitive to tight spaces! The pacing, especially in the last half, is taut and really puts you in the shoes of everyone from mumbling divers to anxious parents.

You would enjoy this if you like true stories about teamwork, problem-solving under pressure, or just tales where regular people do extraordinary things. It’s less about big personalities and more about what happens when people put aside differences for something bigger than themselves. Go in for the suspense, stay for the strangely loveable divers and their relentless, awkward heroism.
